With this issue, The Plant Cell inaugurates a new series and renames an old one. The new series is called Historical Perspective Essays and what were formerly called Insight articles will now be called Current Perspective Essays.

Historical Perspective Essays are intended to provide insights from experienced practitioners into the manner by which major problems in plant biology were originally identified and/or experimentally addressed and how the origins of a field underpin the current state and future of that field. The central concept for these essays is to tie the past to the present and future in a way that can promote better understanding of the "roots" of plant biology and can stimulate thoughtful discussion and debate about where the field in question might be headed. The format and approach are intended to be flexible so that authors will feel free to present what they believe were the important concepts and discoveries of the past, together with what they believe are the most exciting challenges of the future.

We hope that these small changes to the journal will find acceptance and stimulate discussion and comments from the plant biology community at large.
