Tsip1-RNAi plants are more vulnerable to salt and pathogen stresses than vector control plants. (A) Salt-induced senescence of Tsip1-RNAi plants by treatments with various concentrations of NaCl. Leaf discs from Tsip1-RNAi plants and empty vector-transformed plants (Control) were floated in 150, 200 or 400 mM NaCl solution for two days under continuous white light at 25°C, and the chlorophyll content (mg/g fresh weight) was measured. The data represents the means and SE of four independent experiments using four leaf discs in each experiment. (B) Time course of resistance to the bacterial pathogen P. s. tabaci in empty vector transformed transgenic plants and Tsip1-RNAi transgenic plants. Discs (10 mm diameter) were cut from infected leaves everyday following bacterial infection, and the bacterial titers were determined. All the transgenic plants used were independent tobacco F1 lines. Data represents the means and SE of three independent experiments, using three plants per line per experiment.
