COVER: Some members of the Hieracium genus are able to produce seeds asexually by apomixis. This process is characterized by the avoidance of meiotic reduction and by fertilization-independent embryo and endosperm formation. The cover image shows a mature seed head from apomictic H. piloselloides (tall hawkweed). Tucker et al. (pages 1524-1537) have examined the molecular relationships between sexual and apomictic pathways in Hieracium by comparing the spatial and temporal expression of known reproductive marker genes from Arabidopsis in transgenic plants. Their data provide evidence to suggest that sexual and apomictic reproduction are closely interrelated processes at the molecular level sharing common regulators. (See Tucker et al. 1524.)
