(Adapted from Kazaz et al. [2020], Figure 14.)

Four SADs Differentially Contribute to the Production of Different Classes of Lipids During Seed Development.

AAD5 and FAB2 play redundant roles in early embryogenesis, likely through influencing membrane lipid synthesis. AAD1, AAD5, and FAB2 participate in surface lipid synthesis, normal embryo elongation, and seed morphology. All four SADs redundantly contribute to the accumulation of storage lipids (triacylglycerols) during seed maturation. The WRINKLED1 (WRI1) transcription factor directly activates the transcription of AAD1, AAD5, and FAB2. The ω-9 monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) include oleic acid (cis ω-9 18:1) and its monounsaturated derivatives. In mature seeds, ω-9 MUFAs and their polyunsaturated derivatives (PUFAs) account for ∼85% of triacylglycerols that are stored in cytoplasmic lipid droplets.
