About the Cover

Cover Figure

Plant Cell 13 2 The cover images depict (from left to right) the developmental progression from stolon to tuber as revealed by the transport of the phloem-mobile dye, carboxyfluorescein (false colored blue). In the elongating stolons, dye is restricted to the phloem. As tuberization proceeds, symplastic phloem unloading of carboxyfluorescein occurs from the phloem followed by cell-to-cell movement of the dye into storage cells. The central image shows a transverse section of a tuber unloading carboxyfluorescein from both the internal and external phloem systems. On pages 385398 of this issue, Viola et al. use a unique combination of biochemical and confocal imaging approaches to study the changes that accompany the phenomenon of tuberization in potato.
