About the Cover

Cover Figure

-Tubulin is a conserved protein that has a role in microtubule nucleation from microtubule organizing centers, e.g., centrosomes or spindle pole bodies. In higher plant cells that are acentrosomal, the participation of -tubulin in microtubule nucleation is not understood. In this issue, Drykova et al. (pages 465-480) show that -tubulin interacts with -tubulin dimers and forms membrane-associated complexes. The association of -tubulin with dynamic membranes might allow flexible noncentrosomal microtubule nucleation, whereas its presence in other molecular forms suggests additional roles in microtubule organization. On the cover, a fava bean cell is shown with a dense anaphase microtubule spindle (green) and -tubulin (red), which accumulates with short kinetochore microtubules, connecting separating chromosomes (blue) with polar regions rich in membranes.
