COVER: One of the most mysterious questions in biology is how homologous chromosomes find each other during the prophase of meiosis. Pawlowski et al. (pages 1807-1816) have utilized the superb cytology of maize, one of the oldest systems for studying meiosis, to provide new evidence that RAD51, a RecA homolog involved in meiotic and somatic recombination, plays an important role in the process of meiotic homology recognition. The authors have examined a number of maize meiotic mutants with defects in homologous chromosome pairing and found that these defects were correlated with dramatic changes in nuclear distribution patterns of RAD51 in meiotic nuclei. The cover image shows an intriguing cluster of RAD51 foci (green) on meiotic prophase chromosomes (red) in the mutant segII-513.
